STORY OF THE MONTH

This section highlights encouraging and uplifting stories of people who have learned to steward their stories well. In many cases, the stories you’ll see here are of people who have overcome extreme challenges, struggles, adversities, and in some cases…devastating pain. I honor them for their commitment to serve others by sharing parts of their journey. If you have a story to share, we’d love to hear it.

Caroline Holt:

A Life Remembered

Kerry and Shanna Holt have made it their life mission to honor the memory of their daughter; Caroline Holt. Caroline graduated from college in December 2019. Tragically, just six weeks later, in February 2020, her promising life was cut short by an automobile accident at the age of 23. Caroline’s future was filled with hope, anticipation, and the limitless possibilities of youth.

A Unique and Loving Spirit

Caroline was known for her fiercely independent nature, coupled with a loving, caring, and generous heart. Her deep bond with family was evident, and her parents, Kerry and Shanna, cherished the love she shared with them. Caroline’s circle of friends was remarkably diverse, a testament to her ability to unite people from different backgrounds and foster unlikely friendships. After her passing, hundreds of friends visited her parents, each sharing stories of how Caroline had supported them—whether by cooking meals, lending a listening ear, or being the first person they turned to for help. Caroline’s genuine kindness and readiness to assist others filled Kerry and Shanna with pride, knowing she truly cared for those around her.

A Self-Taught Musician

Caroline’s creativity extended to music. She played instruments primarily by ear, having quickly surpassed her piano teacher’s instruction as a child. Driven by curiosity and talent, she taught herself to play guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, bass guitar, and drums, showcasing her remarkable musical abilities.

Compassion for Animals

Caroline also possessed a profound love for animals. She frequently rescued and cared for them, ensuring each found a new, loving home. Her empathy made her unable to tolerate the idea of any animal suffering or going hungry.

Continuing Caroline’s Legacy

In the wake of Caroline’s passing, Kerry and Shanna resolved to keep her memory alive by helping others, just as Caroline had done. With the support of Kerry’s work family, they established a scholarship in her honor almost immediately. The first scholarship was awarded in May 2020 to a graduate of Faith Christian School, Caroline’s alma mater. Each year, this scholarship recognizes students for their service to others and the community.

Additionally, Kerry and Shanna’s church small group has collected donations of pet food and supplies which were donated to a local animal welfare agency—reflecting Caroline’s love for animals.

The Holts have also reached out to other families coping with similar losses, offering comfort, understanding, and support. Their message is clear: while you may never truly “move on” from the loss of a child, it is possible to “move forward,” honoring their memory through acts of kindness and service.
