“This journey is about so much more than me or my book.
You have a story to steward well…a story to share”
~ Rex A Davis
That sentence still feels a little strange to say out loud.
Not because writing was hard, but because I never set out to write a book “about me”. What I wanted was to steward a story well. Some of the stories in Free Fall are mine, because they’re the ones I know best. But if you read this book only as a collection of things that happened to me, you’ll miss the point entirely.
This book isn’t about my life. It’s about what a life can teach.
Inside these pages are ordinary (and a few extraordinary) moments—conversations, decisions, losses, and turning points—that carried uncommon weight. A dream. A prayer. A napkin. A fireplace. And yes, a parachute that didn’t open. None of those moments mattered because they were dramatic. They mattered because they revealed something true—about resilience, about faith, and about what it looks like to keep moving when you’re not sure where the ground is.
“Some of the most meaningful lessons in life don’t come from fireworks moments. They come from common, ordinary conversations that quietly change everything.”
My hope is that as you read, you’ll find more than a story. I hope you’ll find encouragement. Recognition. Maybe even a quiet sense of triumph you didn’t realize you were allowed to claim. Not the kind that makes headlines—but the kind that steadies you and helps you take the next step forward.
“What you now hold is not a product to be sold. It’s a tool to help you. And if it helps just one person, it’s worth it.”
More than anything, I hope this book nudges you toward your own story. Not to polish it. Not to exaggerate it. But to share it honestly, in a way that helps someone else who’s still finding their footing. When we move beyond simply telling what happened to us and begin sharing what it meant, our stories stop being personal possessions and start becoming gifts.

Compelling Testimony of a Life of Purpose
An amazing read from an amazing man! Nothing changes your life more than reading a testimony of how God used life circumstances to propel someone forward into a life of calling purpose and ministry. Free Fall is a must read for anyone who needs encouragement direction and a reset on thinking and purpose.
I believe that I will be a better man having read this book.
When I began reading Free Fall, I was taken by surprise when in the first 14 pages I felt tears welling up and then they started flowing. I knew then that this book was written for me. As I continued reading I found myself being inspired, encouraged and challenged to live and love in such a way that I make a difference. Rex is a master storyteller, with story being the language of the heart. My heart was moved as I read this book and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone and everyone, no matter the season of life.
Lessons for a well-lived life
Rex does a masterful job of weaving his life experiences into lessons applicable for all of us. We all have experiences in our lives but not all of us take the time to extract and apply those lessons that life provides. This book gives us a head start with a list we can start applying now and inspires us to look for the lessons that our own life experiences give us every day. And the stories will keep you turning pages until you finish the book.
Excellent Book, Relevant to All
Excellent read.
Mr Davis has lots of stories to tell and he tells them really well; his voice comes through so clearly in the pages, it feels like you’re reading a long letter written to you by a dearly beloved friend/brother/mentor.
As a very content “nonbeliever“ my concern, when I first ordered this book was that it would be God-centric to the point of feeling alienating to someone like myself.
But this was not the case.
While the author is very open and proud of his relationship with God, the life lessons that I really took from the book were the guiding principles of honor, courage, honesty, humility, respect, connection, and the underrated gift of being able to laugh at yourself; principles which transcend religion and, if adopted by enough of us, could be the start of something amazing.
Thanks Rex! Can’t wait to read your follow up!
Life lessons for getting back up!
I went to college with Rex. He was our Fraternity President my freshman year. When I heard he had written a book on his life experiences, I knew I had to read it.
Rex has always been a card laid card played man, this book just proves it. He puts it all out there. From his early years of growing up with a single mother in the 1960s and fighting to just survive, to losing everyone around him. He shows us that it does not matter if you get knocked down 100 times, but that you get up that 101st time. His life experiences give us strength and inspiration to deal with adversities that we all face. His ability to be open and frank validates our decisions when we have had to make some of the same tough calls. He proves C.S. Lewis’ quote, “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.”
Reading this book will change your perspective on the way you view many events and seasons of your life. However, more importantly, giving it to a young adult will give them perspective before they need it.
Redemption is possible in every situation
Outstanding read! Rex has a fantastic way of inviting you into his incredibly personal intriguing story but then humbly shifting the focus to you and your story. Before you know it, you are connecting with his lessons learned emotionally and then forming strategies for your own life. Throughout the book, you can see God working through difficult situations to grow him into the godly man he as Rex drew closer and closer to God. This is a must read for anyone but especially young men and women who are getting ready to move out into the world on their own. Rex has shown the path to a life well lived and more importantly, The One who makes the path worth living.
Since book is in “story telling” format it is an easy, fun read.
A great investment to share in a story that has a great impact.
A book that makes you pause and think
Really enjoyed this book. It’s an easy read packed with meaningful life lessons and practical takeaways. I walked away with several insights that genuinely made me stop and think. Highly recommend.
Reflective- True stories that inspire growth and guide you forward.
Excellent, thoughtful read! I was taken on a journey of life experiences that shaped a person. Those experiences are told in a way that makes you think about your life and what you are doing with it. Once I started reading I didn’t want to put it down.
A Gripping, Thought-Provoking Ride from Start to Finish
Free Fall by Rex Alan Davis is the kind of book that pulls you in quickly and doesn’t let go. From the opening pages, Davis creates an immersive atmosphere that keeps you turning pages late into the night.
What I especially enjoyed about Free Fall was the way Rex Alan Davis made the book feel like it was about you, the reader. He shares his life lessons in a way that’s practical, relatable, and easy to apply to your own life. Instead of just telling his story, he turns his experiences into meaningful takeaways that encourage reflection and personal growth. It feels less like you’re reading a book and more like you’re having an honest, motivating conversation with someone who’s been through real challenges and wants to help others navigate theirs.
Invaluable Wisdom & Timely Encouragement
Free Fall is an excellent book that provides wisdom that is applicable to any season of life, but especially those difficult moments that life inevitably brings. The insights and personal stories that Rex shares is invaluable and I know this book will encourage you. So, do yourself a favor and purchase this book.
What a beautiful story that started with a young mother’s wise decision that ultimately changed the trajectory of her young son’s life.
That one decision made a life long impact in ways she probably never imagined for her young son. This is a story about the unconditional love and guidance of an unexpectant father (and mother) to a young boy who certainly needed it. We are all shaped by people in our lives in some way, and when we have people in our lives who gives us wise biblical counsel and who model Godly wisdom, grace, and truth to us, it not only changes our lives but also generations to come.
Rex shares his life openly and honestly. How the events in his life affected him and the lessons he learned. How he watched his father handle life with grace and truth, never wavering from his strong Godly foundation. How his daddy made a lasting impact on him that helped shape Rex into the man he is today, a Godly husband, father, and friend who pours into others like his daddy poured into him. In this book you will see how God’s faithful hand and favor has been on Rex’s life from the very beginning and even during tragedy. So sit back and be prepared to laugh, cry, and, most importantly, think….think about how we would handle things in our “free fall” moments.
Each chapter ends with affirmations, nuggets of wisdom, questions to ask ourselves, and maybe changes we need to consider. I have the privilege of knowing Rex and his sweet wife Lisa. I go to church with them. Rex loves people and meets them where they are with unconditional love and acceptance. After reading this book I can see Rex’s daddy in him. A strong, confident, faithful servant of Jesus. A devoted husband and daddy. A forever friend…..and the list keeps going.

Free Fall by Rex Davis is remarkable and uplifting.
From a tough childhood in rural Arkansas to a life filled with meaning and purpose, the story doesn’t gloss over the hard parts—growing up poor, being raised by a great aunt and her husband, and learning life’s toughest lessons early.
As the pages turn, you’ll see how lessons about integrity, self-reliance, and perseverance made all the difference. The guidance received during those formative years shaped a resilient spirit, even when life threw its curveballs.
One of the most powerful parts of the book is the time spent in the Army. There’s a sense of purpose and belonging, and just when things seem to be on track, disaster strikes—a parachute doesn’t open during a jump, leaving a serious injury. Instead of letting it break him, this experience becomes a turning point, showing what resilience really looks like.
What makes Free Fall especially meaningful is how every chapter ends with reflections on lessons learned, encouraging readers to apply them in their own lives. The message is clear: judge less, search for meaning when things get tough, and live with intention—aiming for a legacy that’s about more than just money or outward success.
Throughout the book, there’s a steady push to look at life and others with empathy and to never stop trying to be better. By the end, you’ll feel inspired to see your own story as something that can be filled with new meaning and purpose, no matter where you start.
In short, Free Fall is an honest and hopeful account of overcoming adversity and finding direction. It’s a great read if you’re looking for real-life motivation, guidance, or just a moving story about how to make the most out of what life throws your way.
